The eyes can inform us a lot about our health. They are windows into our bodies, which can show signs and symptoms of any health conditions we may not know about.
The eyes can become dry, irritated and excruciating. If you have at any point felt this, you most likely experienced Dry Eye Syndrome, and many causative factors can cause this condition.
What is Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry Eye Syndrome, also known as Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS), Keratitis Sicca or simply Dry Eyes Syndrome.
Dry eye condition happens when the eyes can not make an adequate amount of tears, or tears dissipating very quickly. This absence of fluid inside the eye can bring about dryness and swelling.
Ayurveda depicts a condition called Shushkakshipaka (Dry, inflamed eye) that matches the clinical explanation of Dry Eyes Syndrome. The condition includes vitiation of Vata-Pitta/Rakta causing disturbed eye functioning that needs holistic treatment for management.
The eyes also helps to show an individual’s dosha. Generally, Vata’s eyes are small and unsteady. Pitta’s eyes are sharp and piercing and reddish or bloodshot. Large, wide and white eyes suggest Kapha dosha. Healthy eyes are serene, cheerful, and beautiful.
What Causes Dry Eye Syndrome?
A variety of reasons cause dry eyes syndrome
- Hormonal Changes
- Autoimmune Disease
- Inflamed eyelid glands
- Allergic eye disease
- Certain medical conditions include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Sjogren’s Syndrome, Allergic Eye Disease, Scleroderma, Thyroid disorders or Vitamin A deficiency.
- Certain medications include drugs for high blood pressure, antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants, acne, birth control, hormone replacement therapy and Parkinson’s disease.
- Corneal nerve sensitivity caused by the contact lens
- Nerve damage caused by laser eye surgery
- In some people, a decrease in tear production or increase in tears evaporation causes Dry Eye Syndrome.
Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome
- High sensitivity to light, smoke, wind
- Constant Headache
- Blurry vision
- Pain in the eyes
- Foreign body sensation
- Eye Fatigue
- Tearing
- Redness of the eyes
- Stringy mucus around or inside the eyes
Who are at the Risk?
- Ageing (after 40, we tend to produce fewer tears)
- Women’s risk of suffering from Dry Eyes Syndrome is more than men’s due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, birth control pills, and menopause
- Eating low Vitamin A in daily diet
- Wearing contact lenses
- Having a history of refractive surgery
Complications Related to Dry Eye Syndrome
When overlooked for a long time, Dry Eyes reach an ongoing stage. Looking for treatment before that stage is suggested. Various complexities might result from Dry Eyes, such as:
- Corneal Ulcer: The cornea is an outside defensive layer of the eyes. This layer is transparent and damp because of its connection with the tear conduit situated toward the end of the eyes. When the tear conduits quit delivering sufficient moisture for the cornea, it gets torn from various points, prompting ulcers.
- Conjunctivitis: Unattended dry eyes may likewise result in irritation and bothering in the conjunctiva, a transparent layer safeguarding the white part of the eyes. This prompts redness, tearing, swelling, irritating, and consistent eye tingling. Together they formulate a condition called conjunctivitis.
- People suffering from Dry Eyes Syndrome often face problems in writing, reading, and keeping their eyes open.
- Depression, insomnia, stress, and anxiety sometimes.
How does Ayurveda help?
Netra Tarpana is basically composed of two Sanskrit words. “Netra” means eyes and “tarpana” means hydration.
